I am not sure...it is not critical for me just an observation and others may have the same problem
The new BAM.dll beta definitely fixes my gaming computer though.
You are right the darkness and blankness of the playfield texture, makes a huge difference in whether or not shadows can even be seen. You and Slam are wise to use them creatively and not on all bulbs and flashers.
This video demonstrates my Indy Mod and I toggle on/off a simple "beachwood" playfield that shows the shadows very well. I set a key to toggle shadows on and off as per menu

I'll send the table later today.. but there is no problem ....shadows just don't show well on a dark busy playfield that's all.
I deleted the "fake " playfield surface and am simply using the Bam texture swapping code on the playfield...so the shadows are definitely there

you did not have the problem you saw just a solid black square?
it seemed to me that you had this problem on indy.....apparently not, right?
No the solid black was on my office computers that have "integrated Intel HD graphics". On those systems, no shadow maps are created...all boxes are solid black and no shadows are cast on playfield..
I think works fine on Indy table on my gaming computer that has Nvidia graphics card, the video is just a demonstration...

I think I will give up on shadows for Phantom of the Opera also. The times I have gotten them to work, the playfield just looks washed out and muddies the colors. I think it might help if we could change the color of the shadows. There are no white lights on POTO. Most lights have been set to an off white for this reason so maybe an off white would work on shadows also.
The shadows of colored lights seem to be colored...

I tried changing the playfield texture to pure white and tested a shadow on Star Trek. The shadows were colored. I even colored the white areas of a shadow of one of the bulbs in the Cache with the same color and it looked the same.
When I made these changes, I noticed that Slam had added some shading on the playfield texture like he used to do so the shadows on the playfield are really a combination of shadow maps and adding highlights to the playfield. He used a fairly light touch on the playfield texture though.
