Thanks Steve will give it a whirl. I use 3ds Max, Solidworks and Inventor , daily at work. There are plenty import/export plugins for 3dsmax. I sure there is a .ms3d plugin. If i have my uv textured & unrapped model in a ms3d format can I avoid using milkshape all together ? Edit: Here is a link to a 3dsmax plugin http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=132343

Because I find that "MilkShape" is too limited. For example I miss the commands AND, NOT, OR, XOR between two objects. Bye ....

could you by any chance load a dual boot with XP? it is certain to work. XSI is so powerfull..if you have another pc even older in the home it will also work on it
I have it on a fairly poor laptop

hallo, an other (very) good 3D tool is Blender 2.5 - my absolute favorite since last year, because the complete new polished/featured interface of Blender 2.5x was released! it is free open source program with a huge amount of features and available add-ons. take a look to http://www.blender.orgor if you need more add-ons already included, visit http://www.graphicall.orgfor blender there are also many many turotials available... here some links to the most populare tutorial sites i remember: http://www.blendernerd.comhttp://www.blenderguru.comhttp://www.blendercookie.comhttp://www.blendswap.comhttp://blendtuts.comhttp://www.katsbits.com... and and and ... by default enabled add-ons for import: COLLADA (.dae) Stanford (.ply) Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg) Stl (.stl) 3D Studio (.3ds) Wavefront (.obj) X3D Extensible 3D (.x3d / .wrl) by default enabled add-ons for export: COLLADA (.dae) Stanford (.ply) Stl (.stl) 3D Studio (.3ds) Autodesk FBX (.fbx) Wavefront (.obj) X3D Extensible 3D (.x3d) but currently i did not found a import / export add-on script for MilkSape3D - but i am sure if there are many requests for, it will be available also... PS.: BTW... Blender has also its own game engine included - and uses the open source physic engine Bullet... PPS.: Blender is available for multiple platforms - Windows 32bit, Windows 64bit, Linux, MAC, ...). You can download and install it as installer version or (what i prefer) as zip file and unzip it where ever you wand - so you will be able to easy use different versions / tastes if it without conflicts. maybe i should put this post as an own separate topic?! (if you find this post very useful and as candidat as a separate topic, please put/move this post as topic)

Hi everybodies.!
here we are, im launching myself in the creation of an original table. I dont know how much time it will take, may be a year, but just hope to see this table alive one day.! I still don't realise how long it can take hehe!
I downloaded the pdf guide that Steve share here, and waouw my God, its a Bible.!! Hope ill still be alive after reading all of this! I downloaded also XSI, and just want to say that for me it works perfectly on my Windows 7. So Franzleo, i think there is still a chance for you to make it works on your computer.
By the way, im looking for a free application which can create a 3D object from 2D pictures. For sure its possible to do it but it cost the skin of my A.. May be XSI can do it but i didnt study it enough right now..and I begin from Zero in 3D.
Have a nice day to you all!

xsi won't do that and yest..the soft that take a picture and manipulate it in order to make a 3d model exist...but dam expensive!..
don't be discourage...try slow...simple shape..make some simple drop target or custom ornament, in no time creativity will take over.
Good luck !
Steve

I use Blender 2.5 and love it. When you say 3D object from 2D pictures what do u mean exactly? Take a 2D photo and pretty much put it on a plane then extrude it out. Update: I think I know what u mean now after going here http://www.photomodeler.com
